ROYAL

Students from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts: Berit Basten, Anders Bülow, Martin Fraenkel, Honza, Marie Søndergaard Lolk, Ninna Poulsen, Krista Rosenkilde and Mads Thomsen.

ROYAL samples some of the diverse approaches to contemporary art, which students of the Art Academy in Copenhagen present right now. The eight participants are at different levels of their studies and their approaches are very unlike, both concerning media and field of orientation.

ROYAL is the last of an ‘unplanned’ exhibition trilogy presenting art students. It differs from the previous ones especially by privileging a diversity of media. The art works counts: Curiously modified every day objects, direct video, insistently elaborated painting, sculpture, figural drawing and illusionary space.

The exhibiting artists are: BERIT BASTEN, ANDERS BüLOW, MARTIN FRAENKEL, HONZA, MARIE SØNDERGAARD LOLK, NINNA POULSEN, KRISTA ROSENKILDE and MADS THOMSEN.

HISTORY
The former two exhibitions in the trilogy presenting art academy students were Elmer’s Cut (2002) curated by the artist Elmer, and New Blood (2004) carrying a title stolen from Saatchi and being an exhibition presented as a comment to Clinch, the established anniversary exhibition at the Danish National Gallery. Since 2002 both the communication of and the interest in the Danish contemporary art scene has changed radically. This influences the premises for how the students navigate in the gallery world, and the premises of how galleries can put up an exhibition with academy students. Unchanged though is the students courage and sometimes damned and difficult dynamics, which has been the important point of departure for a gallery like Galleri Tom Christoffersen.
